Dragon Boat

We attract a broad range of dragon boat paddlers. Some have been with the club since its inception while others are completely new to the sport. We offer a comprehensive training programme that is designed to turn complete beginners into competent dragon boaters in the space of one season. In any given season HKIPC competes in dozens of dragon boat races in Hong Kong and other countries. And that’s before outrigger season!

A Dragon boat is a very long and narrow human powered boat used in the team paddling sport of Dragon boat racing which originated in China.

For racing events, dragon boats are always rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails and are required to carry a large drum aboard. At other times the decorative regalia is usually removed, although the drum often remains aboard for training purposes.

Dragon boat races are traditionally held to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, making dragon boating the only sport to be celebrated as a national holiday. The Lunar calendar date is 5/5, which usually corresponds to a date in June.
