Dragon Boat

HKIPC offers a comprehensive training program that is designed to turn complete beginners into competent dragon boaters in the space of one season. Our Dragon boat training program starts in January and ends with international racing events in around June. Each season HKIPC competes in dozens of dragon boat races in Hong Kong and other countries.

Dragon boat paddling originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. Dragon boats used for racing are long and narrow, with usually 20 paddlers seated in 10 rows of two. For racing events, dragon boats are rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails, and are required to carry a large drum aboard.

Dragon boat races are traditionally held to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, making dragon boating the only sport to be celebrated as a national holiday. The Lunar calendar date is 5/5, which usually corresponds to a date in June.

The Hong Kong Island Paddle Club is proud to announce that the 11th Deep Water Bay Dragon Boat Races on 9th May 2010 was the first Carbon Neutral dragon boat race in the world. With the innovative partnership of Carbon Care Asia, a low carbon solutions specialist, this event was also Hong Kong's first carbon neutral sports event.
